Girls High School Sports

This past week we had three interviews with girls high school coaches from across the state. All three of these interviews will be posted on our website this coming week.

Monday June 1st, we'll post our article about the two time defending state champions St. Pius X Girls Basketball team. We sat down with Coach Phil Griego and talked about last season, the expectations for this season and about a few of his returning players.

We also had the pleasure of visiting Rio Rancho High School to talk to new girls baskeball head coach Pat Puentes. Coach Puentes was just a week into his new position when we visited and very excited about working this summer to have the team ready for next season. He's finding out quickly that his new role has responsibilities outside of x's and o's. We'll post this story on our website this coming Wednesday.
Finally, we start working on girls soccer. We talked with Misty Long, head Coach of Carlsbad girls soccer. Coach Long is in her second season as the head coach and has a young team returning next season but looking forward to good things from her girls.

It has been a busy week for NM HS Sports News, and it continues all summer as we look at schools as they prepare for the upcoming practice which opens on August 10, 2009.

La Cueva Girls Basketball coach resigns

Coach Greg Berger has called it quits as the head coach of the La Cueva girls basketball team. Former UNM Lobo Abbie Letz has been name interim coach. It will be interesting to see if that interim tag will be dropped off. She was a hard worker at UNM and well liked by the fans. We'll be keeping an eye out to see if Letz ends up as the permanent coach in the future.

The Beginning

Well, our website has been up for about one month now. All high school sports are done, but we are working on some stories that will lead up the beginning of the new school year in August.

Tomorrow is part one of our summer series on football programs across the state. Each interview will take a look at last season, each school's summer program/workout schedule and a look ahead to next season. We also talk about coaching styles and philosophies with each coach.

We are proud to begin with Coach Kevin Barker's Sandia Matadors. The interview will be posted Monday morning and can be see on our website:
